A stunning collection of black-and-white photos of steam locomotives on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad taken in the winter of 1963-64. It was the the year rail enthusiast and photographer Frank Barry lived in Chama, New Mexico and was able to capture the engines at their most magnificent, in cold weather, when the steam condenses, and in snow, which makes a dramatic back-drop to the black engines. It was the last full winter steam engines ran in the US, making this collection one of the few of its kind.
