The Photographer

Frank Barry has been chasing trains since he was four years old. In the late 1950s and early ‘60s he hitchhiked all over the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central America, and Europe with his Rolleicord, taking pictures of steam locomotives and the people who ran them. His photos have been on the cover of Trains Magazine, Classic Trains, The Washington Post Magazine, and featured in 23 books including Trains magazine’s 100 Greatest Railroad Photos. They have also been exhibited in the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art.

He is pictured here with his grandson, Dawson (who also likes trains), at a presentation he gave in Trumansburg, NY in 2016. The sign was handmade by Frank in the 1960s.
